I do something a bit like this all the time - I replace the HOT layer served via osm.org with tiles from map.atownsend.org.uk. The advantage to me is that I'm frequently editing things that just aren't rendered by any of the 4 osm.org layers, and if you want to edit something, or even just find out more about it, it helps to know where it is first.

As an aside, it used to be quite easy to replace an existing osm.org layer with something else using a browser plugin. That's less easy now that everything is foreced to be https whether we like it or not (you have to click through a certificate "error" periodically), but still worth the effort.

That isn't what is being asked for here, and certainly in the case of the tile layer I use most wouldn't be appropriate since it doesn't make sense for it to cover the whole world.
