The point is that you can't treat https://www.openstreetmap.org/edit as an instance of iD so the iD documentation is not relevant.

That URL might be iD, or Potlatch 1 or 2 , or an external editor, or some other editor in the future and it has it's own interface which wraps the various underlying editors massaging parameters as necessary.
