Well, the current proposal by the maintainers includes an impossible requirement of "make it dark but don't pick any filter", as stated in https://github.com/openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website/pull/5362#discussion_r1867471665, but to have no change at all would be counterproductive, so removing and reinstating the filter is what you want?
I think just adding an option is less distracting.
