3 clicks on Wikipedia in a similar scenario, without the *Appearance* sidebar visible.

You can propose:
- one always visible preferences button (takes space of one button, saves one click on opening the user menu dropdown)
- clicking *Preferences* going right to the *Edit* page (saves one click)
- clicking *Update* going back to referrer (saves +1 to go back)
- using radio buttons for preferences (saves one click per setting, makes the page larger but maybe you can argue doing this only for the most important settings)
