There was the [suggestion to put the configuration into the preferences](https://github.com/openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website/pull/5325#issuecomment-2477533827), and I kind of like it. Maybe a dropdown that allows you to choose how you'd like it to be. (There should be a map on the preference page then to preview the setting.)
