As I said on the Forum, we need to find a sweet spot between useful and annoying. But I'm more on the side of testing it out, and see how much of a difference it makes. Very few people a day donate (as the table at https://supporting.openstreetmap.org/donate/ shows), which confirms that it's indeed currently hard to find.
