I appreciate the concept behind this label, but it isn’t working. Last year, I renamed iD’s “good first issue” label to “new contributor opportunity”, after we also noticed newcomers picking them up within hours, too fast to be intentional visitors to the repository. We found that at least one site was gamifying good first issues across a massive number of GitHub repos. It was incentivizing the sort of drive-by PRs we frown upon.
Since we renamed the label, fewer of those issues are getting picked up at all, confirming that it was driven by the literal name of the label. There’s still a steady stream of drive-by PRs and offers to create PRs. These seem to focus on the list of recently updated issues, including bug reports and feature requests that the maintainers never got around to vetting.
