In case it helps, MapLibre comes with its own automatic [hash routing](https://maplibre.org/maplibre-gl-js/docs/examples/hash-routing/) functionality. It might need some refactoring to be extensible to the degree that we’d need it, or we could avoid that functionality in favor of our homegrown one. It’s no big deal if we continue to roll our own. (By the way, OpenHistoricalMap has hacked in extra date-related hash parameters, probably not in an ideal manner. I’ll be interested to see what extensibility looks like for our hash routing.)
