For the initial long march PR (once I have the remaining ducks in a row and have burned down the diff enough) I don't think I will include that.

The nessary (minimal) changes for the hash routing mechanism is fairly minimal, that is not very much tied to Leaflet.
Yes, moving to our hash roting util would solve this and be a bit nicer longer term, but also 20LOC more, so lets push that to another PR. Getting changes into this codebase is just a bit hard.
