Even if we were to persist the preference, it would come with the downsides of an A/B test (or more specifically an A/B/C/D/E/F/G/H test), namely misunderstandings between two people thinking they’re looking at the same site. It would increase the need for improved awareness of the layer switcher, but I’m not sure this change on its own would satisfy that need. On the other hand, the experimental question is unclear to me. Which style is so bad that users go out of their way to switch off it? 🤔

I recall another proposed solution to the stated problem long ago, that there would be a “browser ballot” to select a style upfront. Of course, the problem with a browser ballot is that users usually pick at random or give up because they don’t know the correct answer.

There are less socially complex ways to increase awareness of the layer switcher. For example, we could make it a persistent minimap, like the one on [Ben Maps](https://benmaps.fr/) or originally Google Maps. This would make it more convenient to toggle back and forth.
