So it is plausible that this might have been implemented in C++ 10 years ago because, at the time, Ruby was not up to the task. Either in memory consumption, speed, or something along those lines. Can't tell for sure, but it's plausible.

Ruby has gone a long way since then. Is there a way we can test what would happen if Ruby handled this endpoint? Can we... just disable it in cgimap and see what happens? Would we be able to measure this in any useful way?
