@pablobm and I experimented with a potential design for this feature and found that we can simplify it further. For now, instead of tracking any state on an individual notification, let’s just count any undeleted notification in an unread count. That means the user needs a way to delete a notification: #7285. Unlike with private messages, deleting a notification should be no big deal, because the content of most notifications is already listed elsewhere.
If the user wants to hang onto a notification as a reminder, they’ll have to put up with seeing the usual badge in the user menu. A future direction could distinguish read and unread notifications using noticed.
