I don't really want to comment here on the idea of generating general perspective renderings from tiled data in Mercator projection and whether certain effects of trying to do that are *negligible* or *close enough*.

For use of OSM-Carto the advice remains a simple: Don't resample after rendering.  That is not a matter of the amount of distortion - it applies, for example, also to simple rotations - which by any common understanding would be considered a distortion free operation.

If you want to show OSM-Carto in any other form than directly showing the current tiles as is that would be a matter of rendering the style in that form - hence for you something to discuss primarily with OSMF operations.  But the most valuable variants for that would most certainly not be some general perspective projection but

* higher resolution tiles in Mercator projection
* polar stereographic projections

If there is interest in producing such (not just from the OSMF but from any style user) we in OSM-Carto would do what we can within out limited capacities to support such use of the style.

Ultimately what you need to decide is if you want to display maps on the website or if you want your website to be an interactive tool for people to use to ad hoc generate individualized visualizations derived more or less from OSM data.  Trying to do both at the same time is not going to work well.
