> That would be a very bad idea because almost anything could happen when you hit search - in some cases you might suddenly zoom out to basically the whole world.
I personally wouldn't see this as a problem. Right now you often land somewhere and you have no idea if it's even remotely where you wanted to be. For example If I have not zoomed in to a particular area/country (zoom level 3 or 4) and search for Dresden, I might land in either the US or Germany and from a glimpse on the map it might be hard to tell (the search results have the country and county though).
On the other hand if you are [zoomed out ](https://www.openstreetmap.org/search?query=dresden&zoom=3&minlon=-230.80078125000003&minlat=-29.382175075145277&maxlon=106.69921875000001&maxlat=78.09829559916763#map=4/43.52/-44.30)you can easily see which results could be of interest to you.
Possible compromises could be limiting the zoom level to a certain value and fit as many of the top results in as possible (for example[ zoom level 10](https://www.openstreetmap.org/search?query=neudorf&zoom=10&minlon=11.743011474609375&minlat=52.27403984182285&maxlon=14.379730224609377&maxlat=53.033781297849195#map=10/52.6581/13.8112))
Or keep the zoom level at the level the search was initiated at ([zoom 9](https://www.openstreetmap.org/search?query=dresden&zoom=9&minlon=-98.08593750000001&minlat=10.833305983642491&maxlon=39.90234375000001&maxlat=66.93006025862448#map=9/51.060/13.494) vs [zoom 3](https://www.openstreetmap.org/search?query=dresden&zoom=3&minlon=-146.77734375000003&minlat=-40.84706035607122&maxlon=129.19921875000003&maxlat=74.8219342035653#map=3/44.21/-29.88))
