I remember that NorthCrab / Zaczero tried out a different search behaviour:

Some ideas there may be worth thinking about.
He came up with a "Search in area" button to re-do a search in the currently viewed area.
Looking at that 2 year old video, I noticed improvements (markers showing!) made, but also a regression seems to have happened: The OSM search in that video does give results close to where you were on the map. If I try this now, I don't notice any spacial relation anymore. (Try searching for "McDonald's" with the map centered anywhere, it will return the McDonald's Headquarters in Chicago as first result.) I will make a new issue for that...
