I won't try to take any credit for it - at most, I restated your mail
based on my own realisation that the in-place DB change would allow
for some very useful side effects during the path to switchover.
You also mentioned the impact of remapping on any attempt to produce a
last CC planet file, and from what I've seen, at least FOSM has
already realised that a maximally remapped planet isn't necessarily
the forking point they would wish for. So whereas we certainly can and
probably should publish a last CC planet file, I expect it would
mostly be used not by people who want to retain CC forever, but rather
by people who want to keep their maps stable for a few months to allow
time for any data loss to be made good.
So maybe we need to consider the pre-changeover planet in that light instead.
