The code I had in mind is Matt's, so he can best determine whether it
goes beyond ideas that have already been discussed - I'm thinking in
particular of the in-place database change model that you posted based
on Matt's ideas.

+50000, for me this is one of the bigger "decisions" to take now. I
use quotes because I expect that, even if we think the continuous
option will work (and clearly I'm a big fan of it) and even if we
decide to try it out, by experimenting with it now rather than later
we allow ourselves to freedom to fail early and cheap if there turn
out to be snags that can't be fixed.
