Languages may not be enough of a discrimination. For example, in Milan it's
common to hear people say "go to Repubblica and then to Filzi" to refer to
(Piazza) Repubblica and (Via) Filzi. But I've never heard this where I
live, and it's just 70 kms away.

Also, while it's considered formal to say "il fiume Po" (more commonly
you'd say "il Po"), you still commonly hear for example "la roggia Bona"
for smaller waterways, except maybe for local residents. To complicate
things even further, there are some rivers ("fiume" in Italian, which is
masculine) that are commonly referred to as feminine: la Marcova, la
Bormida, la Dora Riparia, la Dora Baltea, la Drava, la Senna; and it's
still debated whether it's more correct to say "il Sesia" or "la Sesia",
but you would surely say "il fiume Sesia".
