According to the ACE website, they are actually an coop.
*The Ace Difference*
The Ace ownership opportunity is unlike any other franchise opportunity.
Ace Hardware is a retailer-owned cooperative, meaning Ace retailers are the
owners of the corporation. In addition to being part owner of a world-class
corporation, you pay no royalty fees and a portion of the profits get
distributed back to the retail owners each year. By joining the #1
distributor in the convenience hardware (Home Channel News, August 2010)
you reap the benefits of collective buying power and having a global brand
along with independent ownership. You will also have the flexibility to
customize your offerings based on your customers’ needs.
But also a franchise.
I'd suggest franchise=Ace Hardware Corporation. The same with many fast
food restaurants. It might be a McD franchise, but the operator is Bad, But
Taste Foods. (OK, I made that last one up.) But often a group of stores is
operated by one company.
