I justed ended up on http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Phone and then
on http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:contact which I never really
visited before and found the box at the top very missleading.
#######################################################################
#Dec. 2013 - While today more users map these new tags, the old tags #
#(phone=*, fax=*, website=* and url=*) are still present 5 times more #
#often in the database. Most applications support both schemes. #
#######################################################################
I have honestly never seen a single POI that uses contact:phone. Also
both ID and JOSM seem to support phone=* in their presets.
This box sounds like there was some proposal or other agreement to use
these "new" tags, but I can't find anything the like.
I looked at the revision history and I think the old box someone changed
a few months back, reflected the reality much better:
#######################################################################
#01 May 2012 - Although some applications support both, the old tags #
#phone=*, fax=*, website=* and url=* remain more popular after two #
#years (including in main editors presets). #
