"they" seem quite happy with waterway=water_point on the UK canal system:

The waterway tag keeps those sites off the main map and GPS units -- on
purpose.



Regardless: the Wiki is what's out of control.  No group of mappers should
have their tags yanked out from under them.
Those who want to change tagging should convince the mappers involved, not
just wikifiddle.
