actually it is a building recycling (or re-use). The structure was built as a hangar for a project called "cargo lifter" which was planned as a zeppelin based transport system for oversized cargo but failed economically before it even started to operate - just the hangar was built ;-)
Quite famous story for Germans, as it was so gigantic and IIRR a significant amount of public money was involved...
