the obvious proposal would be 
amenity=freeshop or give-away_shop or sth similar, if you want to avoid the shop key.

Actually the shop definition seems incompatible with the kind of activity you are dealing with, as it says shop should be used for “a place selling retail products or services” (although this was likely copied from wikipedia without further reflection and could maybe be amended to include free stores).
