FWIW, Wikidata separates the concept "island group"[1] from
"archipelago"[2], which is a group of island and the water bodies
separating those islands. OSM currently does not distinguish between the
two concepts but in Wikidata, these are distinguished. For example, in
Wikidata the Greek Dodecanese[3] is an island group while the Spanish
Canary Islands[4] is an archipelago. In OSM, these two groups are not
tagged with place=archipelago and therefore cannot be queried as explicitly
named groups of islands save for the fact that the Canary Islands are
tagged in OSM as a relation with type=boundary + boundary=region.
