it doesn’t necessarily mean that the feature the name (apparently) comes from is still relevant. Some examples: Hamburg, Nürnberg, Schweinsfurt, Greifswald, ...
It is not all that different for smaller places, generally you need local knowledge to interpret the situation reliably.
