I would see landuse=farmyard as an enclosed area associated with sheds etc.

If 'free range' then I would use landuse=farmland as this would be a larger area.
Some 'free range' properties have travelling sheds that are moved along with the live stock to enable use of various farmyards thus they are free of the usual farmyard buildings.
