There is no residential_link or unclassified_link, so if you try to use the
lower road’s classification, you will run into problems.

And if you tag the link with the lowest way class, when would you use
motorway_link? Only at an interchange between two motorways?

The general practice in the USA and Europe seems to be to tag the link road
with the higher classification.
