Many people are interested in mapping zoo detail, especially where given animal
has an enclosure
It would be desirable to render it on many maps, likely also general purpose maps
(as in zoo areas in high zooms it is among the most important info).
As many people are enthusiastic about mapping this, it would be nice to have
way to map it properly.
Sadly current situation is sad, see
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:attraction%3Danimal
https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/issues/3775
for details.
Current methods:
(1)
tourism=attraction
name=name of species
is both stretching tourism=attraction, using it as "I want label here"
and misusing name tag
(2)
attraction=animal
species=scientific name of species
not rendered, not providing data for rendering it
My proposed schema:
attraction=animal - to mark place where animals are kept in captivity
species:name - common name of species kept there, in a local language
It would
- avoid stretching existing tags
- avoid tagging for renderer
- allow to have OSM based maps including zoo details
(triggered by helping new mapper who wanted to map zoo details)
