It may be better to define species as we currently do for trees.
Yes, it's a horrible way of doing it that was badly thought-out
and badly patched to work around the original problems.  But
you might as well be consistent.

So genus=* for just the genus.  Or species=* for both
genus and species (nasty patch 1).  And species:xx
for common name in given language (nasty patch 2).

Obviously, we don't specify leaf cycles or types for animals. :)
