I'm sure you're frustrated that others keep expanding the scope of the 
discussion beyond Catholicism, but there's a reason for that. The 
denomination=* key is a system of tags; the better defined it is and the 
more consistently mappers use it, the more likely data consumers would 
use it for something interesting. (I can't think of a renderer or search 
engine that currently uses denomination=*, other than to avoid marking 
Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Halls with crosses.)

Besides, denomination=catholic has been around as generic value for 
about as long as denomination=protestant and denomination=orthodox have 
been. All three values were later supplemented by more specific values 
for the same denomination key. Protestantism and Orthodoxy may differ 
from Catholicism in many ways, but it's only natural that people see an 
analogy.
