Hi Frederik,
I'm sorry that you have such a bad impression of the crypto community, and
I must admit that although I love the technology and its potential, I'm
very disappointed that many scammers and bad actors are building a bad
reputation for all of the crypto users.
I agree that OSM could be used as a marketing tool for new
cryptocurrencies, but I don't think it is used so at the moment, at least
according the the payment key wiki
<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:payment> there are just a few
crypto-related tags in OSM with payment.* keys other than payment.bitcoin,
payment.bitcoincash and payment.litecoin. These three are legit
cryptocurrencies that are used for actual payments by many users.
Having these in OSM is fantastic for us crypto users, because it's still in
an adaptation stage where there are not many places to spend our money, so
knowing about these places is great. It's probably even more beneficial for
the merchant who decides to take the risk and accept cryptocurrencies: they
potentially get new customers. It is still marketing by definition, but I
think it's the good kind of marketing, where you don't push any agendas,
you don't show advertisements, you just match supply and demand.
I don't try to push any cryptocurrency in particular, I just would like to
give a clear, structured format in OSM for others who also see the benefits
that these technologies could provide us. Approving this proposal would not
make wrong-intended marketing any easier, but it would unify and
future-proof the cryptocurrency related information in OSM.
If you have any more questions, please continue the discussion on the
proposal's talk page
<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Talk:Proposed_features/Cryptocurrencies_with_payment_tag>,
I'm curious what solution would be acceptable for you.
