I think it would be a good idea to generally follow the model established
with sidewalks here.

e.g.:
compressed_air=separate
bench=separate 
...

And apply this pattern to any type of tag where a yes/no is used to indicate
the presence of some associated feature.

With "separate" meaning "yes, but it's also mapped as it's own object
nearby".

I agree with this interpretation. IMHO you can add the compressed air
property to any feature regardless of the thing mapped separately as well.

No-values should be added with care and thought, because naturally you could
add thousands of no-properties to everything, thereby not only wasting space
but more importantly hiding the interesting information in a giant haystack.
