My apologies for using the wrong term.

Royal Mail here has the "last mile" delivery for some of its competitors.
I think
that's a legal thing, but I'm not sure.

What I was getting at is how many people, when talking about letter boxes
and post offices mean any company other than Deutsche Post? Here, "post"
means the Post Office/Royal Mail combination (which used to be a single
operation until tentative steps were taken towards privatization with the
end
goal of asset stripping).
There are couriers who deliver parcels operating in competition with Royal
Mail.
There are companies that are alternatives to the Post Office for bulk
letter operations
(with Royal Mail handling the last mile delivery) but they're something big
companies with mass mail-outs use, not for ordinary people to send mail.
Here "post" means Post Office/Royal Mail.
Germany may have gone a lot further than the UK in destroying its former
state monopoly on mail, but here the use of "post" for these services would
be a misnomer.
Since you couldn't tell me where people would direct me if I asked for
the nearest Postamt, maybe you could tell me where you would direct
somebody asking for the Postamt.
