Thank you, Georg :)

After giving it more thought, I agree that military=* and historic=* do not
necessarily have to be mutually exclusive. Some military structures and
equipment simply outlast their planned lifespan and remain in use even when
they can be considered historic. I shall adjust the proposal accordingly.

>> Some structures, especially historic ones, are mistagged as historic=*
objects

> If it is not a wrong wording, could you please point me to an example to
clarify what you mean?

I meant mistagged as “other” historic objects. Some examples:

https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/886930679 and adjacent bastions used to
be tagged as 4 unique historic=fort, while they were only parts of a single
larger fortress. I retagged them as not:historic=fort for now, but a proper
tag for bastions would be very helpful.

https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=19/48.92106/7.48689 has a castle with
many objects also tagged as castles. There is only one castle, so that is
very incorrect. Like the previous example, a tag for defensive structures
would be very helpful to point out differences between individual
structures and the castle.

https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/524411083 is an elevated area belonging
to the building that stands on it. It is currently mapped as a monument,
but it could be better mapped as a defensive structure with ruins=yes.

> [[bunker_type=*]] seems to be more detailing _the use_ of a bunker, while
defensive_structure=* is more about the architectural aspects, so both seem
to be complementing for most values

The nice thing about the military is that form always follows function, so
using a single functional tag for a structure (submarine pen, casemate,
hardened aircraft hangar) is nearly always sufficient to describe what the
structure is AND how it is used. That means that all bunker_type=* tags can
be safely included in the defensive_structure=* key with the benefits that
they may be further specified with technical terms and grouped in a single
key together with other defensive structures.
