in substance, you can always use a node in OSM to represent an area, and
you should typically prefer an area /closed way, in particular if you are
interested in conveying information about size, shape, orientation and
possibly things inside the thing you are mapping (topology). Still, it is
perfectly ok to represent a playground or a football with (or anything
else) with just a node, e.g. because you are too lazy to draw an area, just
be aware that it is preliminary and someone else will likely convert it to
an area, sooner or later.

Nodes are usually not converted to areas if they represent very small
things, e.g. a post_box will hardly be mapped as an area, nor will a pole
be mapped as a circle. Everything up to a telephone booth is likely to stay
as a node, unless we will become very detailed ;-)
