entrance is used exclusively for buildings, barrier=entrance is for walls and fences. A building entrance in most cases implies a door, barrier=entrance is explicitly stating no door or gate.

If the barrier feature is missing for the full height, you can simply draw a gap in the barrier and don’t need any additional tags, but if it’s just a hole it is better represented with a node at the intersection as the barrier way is not interrupted.
