Renderers are not the only things that consume OSM data.

Routers need place nodes to determine the centre of a town/city. If you ask for a bike route from Cambridge to Oxford, you want Great St Mary's to Carfax, not a random centroid somewhere in a housing estate to a random centroid somewhere in a lake.

"Don't delete things you don't understand" is quite a good rule of thumb for OSM.
