https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Roles_for_recreational_route_relations
has been approved for recreational routes. It has the approach role for
signed approach routes, and the connection role for signed connection
routes. The roles can be applied to way members or relation members. A link
role was not approved for this purpose. FIne with me, because "link" is a
very ambiguous word.
Back to the starting question: For motorway or road routes, this roles-wiki
doesn't apply, but I think a "link" role is equally ambiguous in those.
