Many 'fords' in Australia are normally dry.
When the river runs high those fords can become impassable for quite
some time .. weeks..
Those who travel there know this, those that don't .. well the Police
normally place 'Road Closed' signs out.
Walking routes that cross streams suffer the same at times, usually a
delay of a day or two will see the water level recede to an acceptable
level and rate of flow.
