it is fine, maybe also just “industry”? There are a few hundred of them but not so much with works: https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/industry#values

No page in the wiki so far, I think this would be suitable to accomodate in a works proposal, or maybe I can see the advantage of works:industry not having any usage so far, but it is a bit unwieldy and ultimately it is the same kind of industry “property” that would be useful for other contexts/feature tags as well, e.g. offices.
