speaking of the Italian situation, zebra markings on traffic signal controlled crossings are customary. These are crossing=traffic_signals in OpenStreetMap.
Then there are zebra crossings (i.e. zebra markings and no signals), where in Italy an additional pedestrian crossing sign is required _only_ if the crossing is distant to a road crossing/intersection. AFAIK we do not distinguish these zebra crossings for the rare case that the vertical sign has been “forgotten” and the only practical difference might arise if someone gets run down while crossing at such a place, because cars will yield (or not) regardless of the presence of the sign.
