I agree, I don't see any reason to be political there. Mapquest is
as good or bad as, for example, the Geofabrik services. And as far
as I know there are no strings attached to using it. Most people who
use the XAPI-Links are mostly interested in getting up-to-date data
fast. The few that do care where their request goes, will be able to
copy the link and change it accordingly.

NB, I think I have read somewhere that requests to jxapi.osm.org are
load-balanced towards the Mapquest servers anyways. But maybe I
remember wrongly.

Perfectly fine for Taginfo as it does not use the bbox feature.

I don't really see a point in spending lots of development time for
a service that is basically dead. So, for me simply switching to JXAPI
will do.
