OK, my turn. I'm also in Sydney (Lindfield on the north shore), and
although I first found out about OSM a couple of months ago, I only
started mapping yesterday. I found that there was a hole in the maps
near home, so I did most of the nearby area, whatever I could do in an
hour or so of driving around.

I used JOSM and it seemed pretty easy to use. The only thing I needed
to do but couldn't figure out how was how to create an area (for a car
park). Any clues would be appreciated.

I have a NaviGPS (SiRF II chipset) which I find to be generally pretty
good, except when travelling slowly. It seems to hunt for a position if
you're not moving much, even at walking pace, but when driving it's
fine. It logs in NMEA format on a removable SD card, and even logging
at one second intervals only uses about 1MB/hour.

Cheers,

John
