Well, I'm Ian, and I live in the southern suburbs of Sydney.
I've just returned from a couple of weeks driving around Darwin and and
Katherine, and in the last few weeks I've aligned the Stuart Highway to the
GPS traces, and added roads through Katherine, Darwin, and through
Litchfield National Park, and a few others. Thanks to whoever did the
first pass through these areas from the Yahoo Imagery, as I did find it
easier to work from the GPS traces in an area where some features are
already filled in.
I was also using tomtom around the territory, and it is quite amazing how
poor the mapping data was, with the highway deviating from the mapped path
so much, and many roads altogether absent. I think I can say that the new
OSM data is much more accurate, with my Garmin 60CSx generally maintaining
3m accuracy and logging points every second or so.
I've also mapped part of the North Coast of NSW, parts of southern Sydney,
and some of the roads down and through to Nowra and Kangaroo Valley.
I'm currently gathering more accurate street data around the northern parts
of the Sydney CBD. Although this is a filled in area already, some of it
lacks a bit of accuracy. Because of the canyoning effect, I'm using the
averaging feature of the 60CSx, which seems to give good results, but just
requires looking a bit stupid standing on a street corner for 60 seconds or
so to get a good reading.
Ian.
