I've found in some areas of Sydney that the historical maps available
online at the National Library and State Library can be useful for street
names.

For an example in Canberra, see something like

Obviously there are some changed features since 1950, so I'm not suggesting
you use it for new mapping, but in my experience if the same street is
there in the same location, it is usually called the same thing.
