Opening JOSM in my part of the world shows a vast number of nodes
remaining after the corresponding ways have gone.  And many more
straight roads than there used to be (ways with the intermediate nodes
deleted).

I wonder if the untagged nodes are scheduled to be cleaned up automatically?
