I'm sorry to hear you feel like that.
And yes, the biggest force of OSM, that everybody can contribute, is
also a disadvantage.
But I think it still outweigts. Most additions and edits are done with
the best intentions. Malicious edits are very seldom.
And even with the most 'professional' people some 'colateral damage' may
occur during edits. A simple PM can solve a lot of things. We are not
only carthographs, but we form also part of the OSM community and as
such, comes also social interaction and education of newbees.
The data in OSM is in an organic growth and there is no eternal value of
one particular edit. Every edit is at some point in time subject to edit
and modification.
The intention of the Wiki system is however that one should try to
modify and keeping as much as much as possible from the original data in
place and not simply delete and replace (altough this might be much
easier in some cases).
And even if some data got deleted, then there will be always someone,
that see the gap and add the data again. That is also the organic growth
principle.
A pity for the original contributor, who saw its original effort lost
and may loose its drive to continue.
That happens also in nature, where tree branches got overwhelmed by
others and die, but in the end the tree florish as never before.
The GSM-antennas and the Lijn is of another order. Here too much data
was added without the proper license.
Also done with the best intentions, but it turned out to be wrong and
after some discussions, the data was removed and everything is now fine
again.
Having to much rules will only form a bigger entry level for new
contributers and in the end it may dry up new blood enterily. I see now
a lot of respect for what is already accomplished by newbees and some
hesitation of will my edits be add something or be welcomed (cfr recent
Introduction thread in Talk.be) .
Even big organizations don't have all their data in order and some may
also be subject to corrections (cfr GSM thread), so I feel that nobody
should have a monopoly to some data.
Try to see the bright side of life at OSM. Meanwhile we thank you for
all your contributions done.
And know you are welcome at any time to pick up with OSM again.
Au revoir,
Gerard.
