[Talk-ca] Quality of Alberta + Next road import area

Hello list,

I did some QA in Alberta this morning and I have to admit that I am quite
deceived by the result. Looking at the city of Camrose in mapnik, it looks
mostly good and the amount of information is impressive. However, some ways
were not connected so I decided to download the area in JOSM to take a closer
look (see attached images).
In fact, all the geobase ways are not connected to the osm ways. On the JOSM
screenshot, the pink way is an original osm way that was there before the
import. We can clearly see that the geobase ways (pretty much all the rest) are
not connected to it. At least the geobase ways are connected to each other.
This was a quite a surprise for me. My understanding was that there would be
some
kind of conflation between both sources in order to get a road NETWORK.
That brings up another question:
Are we doing all of this for cartographic representation only?

In Europe, nice applications are starting to show up that take advantage of the
network of OSM.

It would be great for the network we are building to have a clean topology in
order to be compatible with these technologies.

I think we should correct Alberta first before moving to an other province.

I’m sorry to block the momentum but I think that it is a major issue.
