Hi Richard, (cc: et all)
I don't know if your already on this mailing list, if so, you have already
got this message.

I've also cc'd Kate (sorry both Kate's as i don't know which one was the
one closer to Vancouver :) ... as i just know people by their OSM/IRC
usernames. And there are others in the talk-ca@ list who are in the area
who might also be interested.

For me, I'm not sure if there is a need togo, as the data "is" either
available to us to upload to OSM or it "is not right now". And they either
would "have" WMS capabilities or they "don't yet have" WMS capabilities, for
tracing. As my approach is different. As I (did) want to simply ask
directly to Johnathan directly & get it in writing that "Yes you may use the
data any way you wish for OpenStreetMap" or "At this time, we are not yet
prepared to move towards a license as liberal as Natural Resources
Canada". (for me, either answer will do)

However, since my last communication to Johnathan, Richard responded on his
behalf, indicating that the data "is not compatible.... with your blog
link". And didn't let him respond back to me (or he chose not to
respond). Therefore, calling him now. And not knowing if you already
talked to him (and got the answer that I was looking for) would be rather
foolish of me. So I think the best approach for me at this time would be to
focus on the available data that we have. As my estimate is that it will be
at least 1 year before (the OSM Canada Community) has fully exhausted the
resources that are currently available.

Perhaps someone else is interested in getting a formal response?

After next year (spring 2011), if the data has still not been either
imported, or a direct answer has not been given. I will be happy to
approach both the City of Vancouver (and the Province of BC in Victoria
while I'm at it), on behalf of the OSM Community.

Best of luck for who-ever attends, as I'm sure it would be interesting. I
believe that the OSGeo-BC community members would also be attending (as
there is some obvious interest) :-)

Cheers,

Sam Vekemans
