Bonjour,

Ci-joint un ensemble de commentaires/réponses concernant les derniers courriels reçus

* About named features. In general, features are named in French over Quebec and in English for the rest of Canada. To keep it simple, I have decided to assign the French name to the "name=*" tag when a features has both English and French. However, in those cases, the tag name:fr and name:en are also assigned (the feature will have the name, name:fr and name:en tags). In all cases local mapper are invited to modified the name tag if the French name is not really used by the community.

* About French translation of the Canvec wiki pages. I wished to create French pages instead of having both language in the same page (I find it confusing). I just did not have the time to figure out how to do it. If someone knows how to create them could you send me the recipe...

* About the "type=*" tag. Sam proposes to use *:type=value to define a type value (pipeline:type=gas). However, the Osm wiki does indicate that 'type=*' should be used. I will keep the Osm wiki representation unless many people ask otherwise.

* About the note=* tag. It is used only when I did not find a way to properly translate Canvec coding into Osm tagging. In all cases local mapper are invited to tag it properly based on their knowledge of the feature.

* About Canvec.osm product. The product should begin to be available somewhere within the next month, from south to north, east to west. It will be available based on 50K NTS map sheet tiling as a .zip file that will contain 1:N sub-tiles (not defined yet). You will be advised when the process will begin.

* About the importing process. Some of the features in Canvec.osm files will need updates based on Yahoo imagery and/or local mapper knowledge. In the case you are uploading Canvec.osm data, using Toporama as a source of updates is irrelevant because Toporama is derived from Canvec.

* About the futur. Michael wrote "I know I'm jumping way way ahead... but once we get all the CanVec.osm files imported for all of Canada... what happens with the next version of CanVec data? ". I will have a proposition in few weeks. I will get back to you...

Cheers,

Daniel

Hi Daniel,
Ok here's one.
For the named features in Quebec, is french used as the primary language? I think there is a separate dataset in some cases for the Franch language version. I know that for the National Protected areas file, Yan Morin used the different rules.txt to get french 1st.

This only effects a few features, mainly road names & place names.

Thanks,
Sam
